"San Franciscans and Angele-nos would consider themselves lucky to
have an Italian restaurant as authentically Italian as Biba ..."
Gourmet
Biba Caggiano (1936 – 2019) was a renowned chef, cookbook author, and television host. Born and raised in Italy’s gastronomical capital, Bologna, Biba grew up cooking the food of her native Emilia-Romagna region. Biba brought her talents and her recipes to Sacramento in 1969. Her culinary career began with teaching a series of cooking classes and quickly grew to include publishing nine best-selling cookbooks, which combined have sold more than 600,000 copies. Weekly segments on KCRA News at Noon segued into a syndicated cooking show on TLC and the Discovery Channel.
In 1986, Biba opened her eponymous restaurant in Midtown Sacramento to glowing reviews, both locally and nationally. Her approach to cooking local and seasonal produce combined with using the finest quality ingredients gave rise to Sacramento’s culinary scene. Biba was Farm-to Fork before the movement became synonymous with the Sacramento region. Along with her authentic Italian cuisine, Biba’s warmth and gracious hospitality made diners feel like they were part of her family.
Sadly, Biba passed away in August, 2019. She is survived by her husband Vincent, her two daughters and sons-in-law, six grandchildren, and a community that shared in her love of all things food and family.
