Fast forward to 2008; I was blessed with an opportunity to purchase a restaurant in South Natomas. My family and friends, business partners, and our cooks, we worked day and night getting Mezcal ready and creating recipes for our new menu. We were all exhausted, but excited to share our family and new recipes with everyone. I wanted to create a space where everyone can feel like a guest in my home.
We opened our doors on March 9th in 2009 and we have been blessed by all of the community support and patronage.

Our Food
Mexican food and its techniques are rich in history with influences from the Mayans, the Aztecs, and other Pre-Hispanic cultures. Later on the Spanish and other Europeans brought new crops, stock, and influences. Nowadays Mexican food is diverse and ever evolving. Each state and region have their own techniques and flavors. Here at Mezcal Grill we offer dishes that offer a little bit of everything from all 32 states. For example we bring you carnitas just like our family has been doing them in the state of Michoacan; techniques from the states of Jalisco and Guanajuato, and flavors from the states of Veracruz and Sinaloa. And of course let's not forget about our Tex-Mex and Californian influences.
All of our produce, ingredients, and merchandise are sourced from local growers and vendors. We believe local communities flourish by supporting each other. [-]

Oscar and Josephine Medina opened Zacatecas Cafe in 1963 on the corner [+]of Park and University Ave. The Mexican eatery consisted of three tables, and twelve-bar stools that faced the open hot kitchen-there was no air conditioning. Back then, there was a loud jukebox and a public telephone that hung over one of the tables. Sometimes the noise and heat were overwhelming, but that didn't stop the crowds that formed during the lunch hour.
Today, the restaurant continues to be operated by the second generation Husband and Wife team, Vicky & Jon. Every dish remains prepared by the very same recipes developed by Josephine Medina. Every day we are hard at work carrying the legacy of Oscar & Josephine. We welcome you to be apart of our family and invite you to join us at our relocated location near UCR.

SINCE DAY ONE Our idea of food has been handed down from generations of abuelita’s cooking up a storm of healthy goodness.
Ever noticed how Mexican grandmas get smaller and smaller as they get older and their cooking gets better and better? Ignacio’s little abuelita was the best cook in town.
Today, our food honors recipes handed down from generations of abuelita’s cooking the most flavorful Mexican food you can imagine. We came to the Bay Area many, many years ago as young men from San Jose de Gracia, a land where agave is native and food has always been influenced by what’s available – dairy cattle and seasonal corn, herbs, spices and beans on market days. Everything made from scratch. Tequila flowed and everyone happy with songs and dancing. Food was always spicy as tequila makes you crave some spice, some life. Everything was organic, local, simple.
Today our food is suggestive of that heritage. We riff off it some, embracing pre-Columbian flavors from the Mayans and the Aztecs and we include a lot of organic, California-grown ingredients. We pride ourselves on quality and keep your health and the environment in mind. From our kitchen to you, it’s the Andalé way. [-]

Today, Nico’s son Jose Carreon owns and operates Nico’s and continuing to work at the family business as he did when he was a child. Ocean Beach residents still talk about Nicolas and his iconic cowboy hat. Nicolas was known for his hat and it still resides at the restaurant in a display case over the register. Nico’s Mexican Food has been serving the San Diego Ocean Beach community with fresh, delicious, and authentic Mexican food since 1982. Started by Nicolas “Nico†Carreon and his wife Catalina over 36 years ago, Nico’s has been a family [+]operation since the beginning. Due to limited means, the entire Carreon family participated in running Nico’s, building it into what is now a locals and San Diego visitor favorite in Ocean Beach.
Today, Nico’s son Jose Carreon owns and operates Nico’s and continuing to work at the family business as he did when he was a child. Ocean Beach residents still talk about Nicolas and his iconic cowboy hat. Nicolas was known for his hat and it still resides at the restaurant in a display case over the register. Jose keeps the hat on display as a constant reminder of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice his father made to build Nico’s into the great Mexican food restaurant it is today.

If you have any interest in history, you already know [+]that Abraham Lincoln was a very vocal opponent of the Mexican-American War. Mexico later honored Lincoln by creating a statue in his likeness. As it turns out, we’re also big fans of Abraham Lincoln!… And tequila. And tacos. And beer. And sunsets. Since we couldn’t build a statue in honor of “Honest Abeâ€, we were left with no choice but to open the best rooftop bar in Pacific Beach and combine all of our passions into one awesome location!
Our rooftop overlooks Pacific Beach. Our gourmet tacos are made with fresh, local ingredients and served in house-made tortillas. Our bar features a large selection of tequilas, with 18 beers on tap. We have 24 HD TVs and a giant projection screen. There’s no place on the boardwalk like us. Our bar was built on the concept of Dia de los Muertos. Combine all of these elements, and El Prez is where to drink, where to eat and where to party in San Diego!
The accolades have been pouring in.
